Lineage Profile: 郝守本 (Hǎo Shǒuběn / Neil D. Pignatano)
Sifu Neil D. Pignatano (lineage name: 郝守本 — Hǎo Shǒuběn) is a designated 7th Generation Gatekeeper of pre-Republic Wǔ(Hǎo) Tàijíquán, serving as a primary repository for the transmission of the lineage within North America.
The Pasadena Foundations
Sifu Pignatano’s practice began in Pasadena, California, where he spent six years (1985–1991) training directly under Sifu Dan Lee. Immersed in the traditional Yáng long form and its classical weapons matrix, he was appointed Senior Teaching Assistant in 1990. Under Lee-sifu, his progression culminated in fluency with the classical Yáng two-person combat set.
The CalTech Inheritance and Advanced Transmission
In 1988, Sifu Pignatano became a founding member of the CalTech Kung-fu Club. There, he trained for twelve years (1988–2000) under the 6th Generation Gatekeeper, Sifu Ang Lip Lin (Hóng Lìpíng). Before entering the core Wǔ(Hǎo) track, Sifu Pignatano studied to achieve fluency across Ang-sifu's foundational disciplines:
While the physical choreography of the Wǔ(Hǎo) 108 Long Form was available to anyone who completed those prerequisites, Ang-sifu strictly guarded the deeper, internal mechanics. Advanced training was granted exclusively to those he deemed to have sufficiently grasped the underlying theory of the form, rather than merely performing the choreography. Out of everyone who trained, only three individuals were selected for this advanced internal transmission. Today, only two of those practitioners remain alive, preserving the art on opposite coasts of the continent.
The Passing of the Lineage
In 1993, the unbroken lineage transmission was formally passed to Sifu Pignatano by Ang-sifu under his traditional title: Hǎo Shǒuběn (郝守本).
Executive Direction and the Wǔguān Code
Today, as an active Gatekeeper, Sifu Pignatano directs the training floor of the Wǔguān. His focus is strictly on the foundational work of maintaining a perfectly upright and centered spine, dropping the tailbone, and completely removing localized muscular tension from the body.
"True Kung-fu is an acquisition of profound skill through relentless diligence over years of life. It cannot be rushed, commoditized, or faked. No matter how much you train, you are still a student, because there is always something else to learn." — Sifu Neil D. Pignatano (Hǎo Shǒuběn)
